Recently, Johnson & Johnson was ordered to pay $72 million to the family of a woman who suffered from ovarian cancer after using the company’s talc-based products for years. Sadly, the woman’s illness eventually led to her death. According to Bloomberg Business, the case was of the first to go to trial over the claims.
Sources state that the $72 million is broken down in two separate types compensation:
- $62 million in punitive damages will be awarded to the woman’s family. This is used to punish Johnson & Johnson for their dangerous products and their failure to warn consumers.
- $10 million in compensatory damages will be awarded to the woman’s family.
This is the first time a jury has ordered Johnson & Johnson, the world’s leading healthcare product creator, to compensate for damages caused by a product the company knew had the potential to cause cancer, especially in women. The company refrained from warning consumers.
Other Lawsuits Filed Against Johnson & Johnson
As of now, more than 1,200 other lawsuits have been filed against the company. Sources state the following two Johnson & Johnson products are linked to causing ovarian cancer:
- Baby Powder
- Shower-to-Shower
